4 Quick Ways To Prevent Back Pain

1) Lose those extra pounds. Not only does excess weight contribute to back pain, it is known that people who are overweight are often at greater risk for joint pain and muscle strain as well. By losing weight and staying trim you decrease the load on your spine and joints.

2) Drink more water. Proper hydration with pure water is extremely important. Spinal discs, the shock absorbers of the spine, are up to 90% water. If you don’t drink enough water, your inter-vertebral discs won’t have the ability to replenish themselves with their most important component. This can lead to disc degeneration (bulging or herniated discs) and added stress on the back. You can avoid this by simply drinking as much water as you can throughout the day, and by avoiding sodas, alcohol, coffee, and other drinks that actually act as diuretics and dehydrate you.

3) Get Moving. A sedentary lifestyle contributes greatly to back pain. Most of the working adults nowadays sit all day at work and simply don’t get enough exercise during the work week. We are always advising our patients to back away from the computer or TV and go for a walk. Physical fitness, including both aerobic exercise and strength training, can decrease your risk for back (lumbar spine) pain. Be sure to consult with your doctor before launching into any exercise or diet program.

4) Don’t Smoke/Reduce Smoking. Smoking can accelerate the aging process by decreasing the amount of nutrients delivered to the blood vessels, spinal discs and surrounding tissues. Smokers have lower levels of oxygen in their spines, therefore prolonging the healing process if ever they had a herniated discs or torn ligaments.

Doctors of chiropractic are the primary providers of spinal manipulation. Their training allows them to diagnosis your problem and custom a specific exercise plan to help you get out of pain and to a healthy spine.
